Please note that WorkSafe ACT mandates that workers in the Australian Capital Territory must complete a specific awareness course called “10675NAT”. This is NOT that course.

Is this course accepted in the ACT?

No, in the ACT you need to do the 10675NAT Asbestos Awareness course

Is this course accredited?

No, this an awareness course only. However this course meets the requirements of the various SafeWork departments in all States (except the ACT) for workers who may be exposed to asbesos containing materials (ACM).

Will I get a licence when I complete this course?

No, this course has no licenced outcome, but you will receive a Certificate of Completion

Do I need asbestos awareness training or asbestos removal courses?

• Asbestos removal in areas of less than 10m2

If workers are carrying out asbestos removal work in an area that is less than 10m2, and/or work in an industry where there is a risk of them being exposed to asbestos while performing their regular work — then asbestos awareness training is required. Examples of professionals who should undergo asbestos awareness training include electricians, plumbers, and bathroom and kitchen renovators, among others.

The training must be relevant to the task and must cover:

• Asbestos identification
• Safe handling of asbestos
• Suitable control measures
• Asbestos removal or friable asbestos removal in areas of more than 10m2

Workers are only allowed to remove asbestos-containing materials from areas of more than 10m2 if they have completed the specified VET course and received their certification before beginning the work.

Those workers who supervise the removal of asbestos also need to undergo additional training before they are allowed to do so. Find more information about our different asbestos removal courses here.

Is asbestos awareness training a legal requirement?

Yes, asbestos awareness training is a legal requirement for anyone who might disturb or come into contact with asbestos while performing their regular work duties.

How long is an asbestos awareness certificate valid for?

Most asbestos awareness certificates are valid for one year only. However, there is no legal requirement that someone must undergo an entire formal awareness refresher course with an asbestos training provider every 12 months. These standards align with refresher training for any licensed or non-licensed work that should be renewed annually.
