Traffic Control Course (Combo)

Entry Requirements

Evidence of Identity (EOI)

By completing this traffic control combo course participants will gain the skills and knowledge from Traffic Controller Skill Set to:

  • Stop/direct road users using a stop/slow bat and understand stopping sight distances
  • Monitor traffic with portable traffic control devices and temporary traffic signs according to traffic management plans and traffic guidance schemes
  • Maintain traffic incident reports
  • Understand the Traffic Guidance Schemes (TGSs) also known as Traffic Management Plans (TMPs) for the site
  • Assess and respond to changes in the environment, for example traffic volumes, weather conditions, road conditions, Work Health and Safety (WHS) and operational requirements
  • Carry out risk assessments for personal safety
  • Participate in toolbox talks (specific to traffic control)
  • Use communication methods and devices
  • Conform to traffic control policy and procedures

By completing this traffic control combo course participants will gain the skills and knowledge from Traffic Management Implementer Skill Set to:

  • Identify safety implications of traffic control at road works and personal responsibilities
  • Set up, monitor and close down traffic control devices according to a nominated TGS/TMP, to WHS and legislative requirements
  • Operate a two-way radio correctly and effectively
  • Check, clean and store equipment on completion of work and close down a TGS/TMP
  • Know the basic function of the TGS/TMP system
  • Locate and apply required legislations, documentation, policies and procedures including documentation required for worksite projects and required traffic management
  • Locate and apply required legislation, regulations, codes and procedures including Austroads Codes of Practice and WHS applicable to temporary traffic management
  • Adapt to all work health and safety (WHS) and operational requirements
  • Use the site/location assessment, distinguish topographical landmarks and carry out authorised risk control
  • Conduct an onsite check of a TGS/TMP to identify any unexpected risks/hazards
  • Plan for emergencies that may arise
  • Ensure spacing between signs and traffic control devices is in line with a TGS/TMP
  • Understand speed, environment, type and class of vehicles, traffic density, sight lines, environmental conditions, weather patterns and surface type
  • Maintain traffic incident reports
  • Monitor traffic controllers

The duration is:

  • 2 days training
  • 1 x day live practical assessment

Students will be assessed using relevant assessment methods which includes but is not limited to the following:

  • Knowledge evidence requires student to answer a range of theory questions
  • Performance evidence requires students to control traffic with a stop-slow bat and with portable traffic control devices and temporary traffic signs according to traffic guidance schemes in a manner that is safe and follows workplace policies and procedures
  • Performance evidence requires students to:
  • implement traffic management plans in a manner that is safe and follows workplace policies and procedures
  • position, set-up and program portable traffic control devices and temporary traffic signs according to traffic guidance schemes in a manner that is safe and follows workplace policies and procedures

Statement of Attainment:

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be issued with two Statements of Attainment as follows:

RIISS00054 Traffic Controller Skill Set which includes the following units of competency:

  • RIICOM201E Communicate in the workplace
  • RIIWHS201E Work safely and follow WHS policies and procedures
  • RIIWHS205E Control traffic with stop-slow bat
  • RIIWHS206 Control traffic with portable traffic control devices and temporary traffic signs

RIISS00055 Traffic Management Implementer Skill Set including the following units of competency:

  • RIIWHS201E Work Safely and follow WHS policies and procedures
  • RIICOM201E Communicate in the workplace
  • RIIRIS301E Apply risk management process
  • RIIWHS302E Implement traffic management plans
  • RIIWHS303 Position, set-up and program portable traffic control devices
  1. Trainer issues 2 x SafeWork NSW Statements of Completion for Traffic Control Work Training which is valid for 90 days to evidence successful completion of the following:
    1. Traffic Control Training
    2. Traffic Management Implementer Training
  2. Students undertake live practical assessment for:
    1. Traffic Control Training
    2. Traffic Management Implementer Training
  3. When students pass, DLI Training lodges the following document to SafeWork NSW OLE:
    1. Signed/completed SafeWork NSW Evidence of Identity and Record of Training for Traffic Control Work Training under the Work Health and Safety Regulation 2017
  4. SafeWork NSW contacts the student via email or SMS to advise that their SafeWork NSW Traffic Control License Card with both Traffic Control and Traffic Management Implementer has been approved and the duration to expect to receive the card
  5. Students will receive their Traffic Control Card License card from SafeWork NSW
  6. Students may work using the Statement of Completion for Traffic Control Work Training to work until they receive their Traffic Control Card

  • Traffic Control Combined: 2 days of training + 1 full day of practical assessment.
